Double Glazing or Triple Glazing?

Double Glazing or Triple Glazing?

Double Glazing or Triple Glazing?

With the cold weather now upon us, and the heating being turned on, many people start to think about changing their windows in order to improve the warmth of their homes.

WINDOW FUNCTIONS

A window has three main functions:

  • Let light into your home
  • Keep your house secure
  • Protect you from the elements.

Windows can be the weak spot when it comes to the energy efficiency of a building. They could no-longer be keeping a house warm if they are over 10 years old, ill fitting, damaged, or single glazed.

DOUBLE GLAZING OR TRIPLE GLAZING

As well as choosing the right material for the windows – PVCu, aluminium, timber or composites, you will also need to decide between double glazing or triple glazing.

Double-glazed units have seen big improvements in their performance capabilities. However triple glazing is seen by some as the next logical step in meeting tightening building performance regulations.

Triple glazing can not only provide the very best in heat insulation it also offers additional noise reduction and improved security.

When it gets really cold outside and the internal temperature is set to be 21°C, the internal surface temperature next to your window will be:

  • Single glazed window around 1°C.
  • Double glazed window (pre 2000) around 11°C.
  • Modern, energy-efficient double glazed window, around 16°C.
  • Triple glazed window, with a U value of just 0.65, the temperature is around 18°C.

While double glazing is perfectly adequate, a triple glazed window is just that much more comfortable. Whilst still a very efficient option in the typical home, double glazing can create cold patches in a property.

Triple glazing is widely used in countries with cold climates and houses wishing to reach PassivHaus standards. If the walls, roof and floor in a home have all been insulated but the windows haven’t this can lead to condensation on the window. So in order to match the standard of the insulation elsewhere in the house, triple glazing is recommended.
